6-Bed Child and Adolescent Mental Health Inpatient Unit

Program Description

Serves children and adolescents up to their 19th birthday whose mental health needs cannot be met on an outpatient basis. The six inpatient beds are used for acutely ill children and adolescents who need a 24-hour protective, therapeutic environment and close professional assessment and stabilization. The treatment team consists of a psychiatrist, child and youth workers, two teachers, an educational assistant, a social worker, registered nurses, a dietician, a chaplain and a pharmacist. The treatment team, together with the patient and family, will create an individualized treatment plan for each patient. Average length of stay is intended to be approximately three weeks. Model of service is bio-psychosocial.

Access Information

Admission to the inpatient unit is facilitated through the emergency department or through elective referrals. Criteria for admission include high-risk of harm to self or others, and acute psychiatric states, including psychosis or acute stress response syndromes requiring assessment and treatment in a safe, supervised setting. Goals of an inpatient stay are to: assess and stabilize; clarify the diagnosis; initiate treatment; educate the child/adolescent and family about the disorder, its treatment and management; and connect with community resources for ongoing assessment and treatment. Note: the inpatient unit is not appropriate for ongoing treatment of eating disorders or active substance abuse (i.e. treatment for acute withdrawal-related symptoms).
