Program Description

The Domestic Violence Program provides care to individuals who are living with domestic violence. A group of specially trained nurses called the Domestic Violence Response Team is available twenty-four hours a day through the Emergency Department. The team provides: emergency and follow-up medical care for injuries; collection of information (evidence) that could be used in a criminal investigation, if client wishes; crisis emotional support; safety planning; arrangements for client to talk to the police, if client wishes; and information about any or all of the preceding. The team works together with other community services to offer emotional support and assistance through the legal process. There is a full time Domestic Violence Follow-up Nurse available for safety planning and assistance with referrals. In addition, booked follow-up counselling sessions with an MSW are offered.
