Counselling and Treatment

Program Description

The Child & Youth Mental Health Urgent Consult Clinic (CYMHUCC) is an outpatient clinic within the Program that sees children and youth who are presenting with suicidal/homicidal ideation, have made threats of violence, have dyscontrol due to drugs or psychosis, or other urgent mental health concerns that require an immediate risk assessment.

The Urgent Consult Clinic is staffed by a Social Worker (MSW), Registered Nurse, Social Service Worker, Psychometrist and a Child & Youth Psychiatrist. As we are part of an Academic Health Sciences Centre Psychiatry Residents/Fellows and Family Medicine Residents will often complete rotations with the clinic, and field placements are also provided for Psychology, Social Work and Nursing Students.

The Urgent Consult Clinic provides families with rapid access to risk assessments by trained and compassionate staff. This assessment includes a full history taken by a member of our multidisciplinary team who then consults with the Psychiatrist; a diagnosis is provided if needed, and brief crisis-oriented interventions including behavioural and medical management is provided for up to six sessions. Often, patients and their families are provided with referrals to other community resources as needed, and in the most extreme cases we can help facilitate admission to our inpatient psychiatric unit located at our KGH site.

COVID-19 Note

We continue to provide services virtually and are also seeing clients in-person with PPE and physical distancing in place.
