Community Treatment Order (CTO) - Case Management

Type of Service

Case Management/Supportive Counselling & Services - Mental Health

Program Description

This service is provided to individuals with a serious mental illness aged 16 and older residing in Elgin County. The purpose of a Community Treatment Order (CTO) is to provide a person who suffers from a serious mental disorder with a comprehensive plan of community-based treatment or care and supervision. A CTO is especially an option for the person who, as a result of a serious mental disorder, has a pattern of stopping treatment or care after being released from a psychiatric hospital; a pattern that then leads to more indications of the mental disorder and a return to hospital care and supervision. A CTO is usually signed by a psychiatrist and involves a community support team for the person. The person with the serious mental disorder or his/her substitute decision maker takes part in the planning of a CTO. The Canadian Mental Health Association, Elgin provides a CTO Case Manager to assist both in the planning and implementation of this alternative to institutional treatment.
