Mental Health Court Support Services

Type of Service

Diversion and Court Support

Program Description

There are three services offered through the Mental Health Court Support Services: court diversion, case management, release planning, court support and consultation. Court diversion is used to divert individuals from the criminal justice system (minor criminal offences only) into the mental health system where they can get the support and treatment designed to address their needs and minimize further involvement with the criminal justice system. Case management is used in order to promote compliance with the agreed upon diversion plan for up to one year after the charge has been diverted. Individuals who may not qualify for the diversion process can still receive support, consultation, and referral to other community supports while navigating the court process through the court support and consultation program. The release planner works with incarcerated individuals to develop a successful plan, this may include supportive housing, medication/medical monitoring, substance abuse counselling, family contacts or case management. Regular updates will be provided to the crown for up to one year after the charge is diverted. Model of service is psychosocial rehabilitation.
