Program Description

Concurrent Youth Inpatient Unit (CYU) is a 12-bed inpatient unit providing developmentally informed co-ed treatment for youth, 14-18 years old, with concurrent disorders: a moderate to severe addiction to substances and accompanying mental health challenges. In summer months, when academic programming is not offered, we will serve up to 21 years of age. A provincial service, and in a schedule 1 facility, CAMH, the CYU admits youth both voluntarily, or certified under the Mental Health Act and detained involuntarily. This is an acute care unit; is not a residential program, and length of stay ranges from 2 to 6 weeks. The program is highly structured and services include pharmacological treatment, diagnostic assessment, individual, group, and family therapy provided by an inter-disciplinary team and evidence-based programming and approaches include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing (MI). Academic support, with a TDSB Section 23 classroom is included in the September to June programming.

Referrals are accepted from all sources, including self-referral, or referral by physician, school, or other healthcare professionals. Length of stay is based on client need and varies widely between clients.
